For the first year ever, New York experienced Africa Fashion Week (AFWNY). The event took place during the week of July 12-18 at The Broad Street Ballroom in lower Manhattan. The event was produced by the young and very talented Adiat Disu, daughter of a former World Cup, player Tajudeen Disu (Did I mention she is only 23 and is already the founder of Adiree Fashion Agency, an agency focused on helping clients with their advertising, planning, business consulting, PR needs?!). The entire event included 2 days of Runway shows, a vendor show as well as a glitzy soiree to crown the whole week.
AFWNY’s main purpose was to showcase wonderful African designers’ works ranging from clothes to fantastic jewelry and accessories! And the best part is that the proceeds from the event went towards funding for nonprofit organizations currently supporting Africa.
I was so glad to have been “an insider” at this event! I had the privilege to walk the runway for many designers ranging from BebeGrafiti, whose designs were elegant yet funky (yes, my outfit included a gold cane!) to Kosibah whose beautiful wedding gowns made every woman want to say “I do”.

I loved all of the outfits and thought this was a great way to show the world what Africans are made of. The textiles, the beautiful bright colors, the precision of each piece left me in awe. To be able to walk the runway and help showcase outfits created by such a talented group of people was an unbelievable experience. By mixing traditional fabrics with modern looks and designs, these designers really brought out the notion of blending the best of both worlds.

Welcome to Africa on the blog Saran. I really love the dresses the Bebegrafti is my favourite. They are some talented African designers out there and it is good to learn that they were able to showcase their work.

It must have felt so good surrounded by all that African talent. I had the pleasure to meet Bunmi KoKo (the winner of the emerging international designer award at this event) and her team at on Friday in London and was so excited just to be around African success. Look forward to more next year!
