Africa has come to realize it needs to embrace the benefits of technology now else risk being left behind the development trail. I have come across various instances that seem to suggest, different facets of our economy have seen some injections of elements of technology. First, is the African social media fuel that led to successful demonstrations in Tunisia and Egypt. One would argue these races are not indegninously African breeds. I still think we share a common fate when it comes to the challenges faced by the physical continent.
In Ghana, I was amazed to learn over the weekend that the New Patriotic Party was planning on vetting its aspirants from the diaspora by Skype. For me, this was a creative feat that needed mention and has to be encouraged. At the Innovation week at the Kofi Annan Center of Excellence, the MUSIGA boss mentioned her outfit had set up a digital library to help musicians and artists in the country keep track of who made use of their songs and demand for royalties based on such information.
The few examples I have sampled, I believe is evidence enough to convince you that Africa is beginning to get hints regarding the benefits technology could present to it. From March 28th to April 1st the Kofi Annan Center of Excellence will be throwing more light on the innovations pursued by the ‘Facebook entrepreneurs’ in Ghana. The I-week 2011 themed ‘Marketing Innovation’, is dedicated to exposing technologies developed by local talents.
