Motherland

My heart beats for you,
Motherland.
How could I not
return to you?
A land where laughter
and the zest for life
wrestle hardships and
unspeakable agonies
to the ground.
Where one can smell
the parched earth
thirstily gulping down rain.
And clouds tell of journeys
Across faraway seas
and continents.
Motherland,
my heart beats for you.

I wrote this poem as a tribute to the continent of Africa after living in Germany for about two years. There is no place like the Motherland. In spite of the many odds Africans face, they still really know how to enjoy life. I’m glad to share in that.

  1. Chiira Maina says:

And it means so much more to us as Africans when one can know that they are at peace with themsleves and also happy.

Your poem articulates my feelings when i was a student in Austria. I felt so homesick that I nearly quit! Thanks for sharing
