Ida Horner
I grew up in Idi Amin’s Uganda and the first 20 years my life were marked by civil wars. I left Uganda on a scholarship from the Austrian government to study at the Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management and eventually moved to the UK.
After working in the hotel industry for sometime, I enrolled on a degree program in Housing Management and development at Westminster University in London and had a successful career as a District Housing Manager for a London Housing Authority prior to the events of December 2006
In December 2006 I returned to Uganda for Christmas and whilst there I was invited to a New Year’s eve party in South West Uganda. I had never been to this part of Uganda and found it difficult to reconcile the beauty of that part of the country with the poverty – I resolved to do something on my return to the UK and the result is ETHNIC SUPPLIES; an online social enterprise. I also run a charity ;LET THEM HELP THEMSELVES OUT OF POVERTY; that support communities in Uganda to access clean water amongst other things.
I provide Project Management and Consulting services to companies wishing to source products from East Africa in a more ethical way and I am currently working with 4 companies including a coffee roasting company based in North London.
I speak on issues of sustainable development and those affecting poverty stricken African women.
